With the seasonal change to autumn that October brings and the darker evenings drawing in, it can lead to a dip in our moods and leave us feeling a bit low. Here our are top 5 ways to help lift your spirits and tackle those autumn blues.

1. Listen to music

Listening to music has a profound impact on us emotionally. If you’re struggling to find the motivation to get up and go in the mornings, set up an alarm on your phone to wake you up with a song that gets you energised.

2. Smile!

Smiling causes your brain to release happy hormones and has shown to bring stress-levels down. Even a forced smile can lead to a mood boost and will help you start to feel more positive.

3. Break the routine

Whether it’s going for a walk or tidying the house, keeping active helps keep the blues away as each task you complete will help give you a sense of achievement.

4. Talk to someone

Whether it’s a 5 minute check-in with a friend or a long overdue catch up with a relative, talking to others helps us bring ourselves out of our own thoughts. Pick up the phone, write a letter or chat online (see our virtual guides here).

5. Regular exercise

It might be the last thing on your mind but even a walk around the block can help boost your immune system and promote feelings of happiness. Find a fitness buddy if you are lacking motivation and make a weekly routine of various routes or exercises to enjoy together.
