As the days grow shorter and the temperature begins to drop, winter can bring a few extra challenges – particularly when it comes to keeping warm, comfortable, and safe at home. With a little planning and the right support, you can enjoy the season with confidence.

1. Preventing falls

Cold and wet weather can make outdoor surfaces slippery, and shorter days can affect visibility. To help reduce the risk of falls:

  • Keep pathways clear and well-lit – solar or motion-sensor lighting can be particularly useful.
  • Have a pair of sturdy, non-slip shoes or boots ready for when you need to step outside.
  • Indoors, remove loose rugs and keep hallways and walkways free from clutter.
  • If you use a walking aid, check the rubber tips are in good condition and replace them if worn.

The Mayfield Villages Care team can offer assistance by reviewing your home environment, helping with small tasks to reduce unnecessary movement, and ensuring your home remains safe and accessible during the colder months.

2. Managing heating and comfort

Staying warm is essential for health and wellbeing throughout winter.

  • Set your heating to maintain a consistent temperature – ideally between 18–21°C (64–70°F).
  • Close curtains as dusk falls to retain warmth and, if needed, use draught excluders around doors.
  • Dress in comfortable layers and keep blankets or throws nearby for extra cosiness.

If you’re ever unsure about your heating controls or energy supply, the Mayfield Villages Care team can help by adjusting thermostats, checking fuel levels, or arranging maintenance visits when required.

3. Managing medication

Winter colds and flu can sometimes disrupt daily routines. To help stay on top of your medication:

  • Keep an adequate supply of prescriptions and order refills early to avoid running short in bad weather.
  • Store medicines in a cool, dry place away from direct heat.
  • If you’re unsure about mixing cold remedies with regular medication, speak to your pharmacist or GP for guidance.

Our care team can support by collecting prescriptions, setting reminders, and helping organise your medication – offering reassurance and peace of mind throughout the season.

4. Support with errands during bad weather

When the weather takes a turn, getting out for shopping or appointments can become difficult. The Mayfield Villages Care team is here to help with:

  • Grocery shopping and collecting essentials
  • Attending appointments or arranging transport
  • Preparing warm, nutritious meals at home

Even small gestures – like ensuring there’s fresh milk in the fridge, a warm meal ready, and someone to chat with – can make all the difference during winter.

A little preparation goes a long way. With the right care and support, you can stay safe, comfortable, and connected – whatever the weather brings.
