Louisa, our wonderful housekeeper at Mayfield Watford, last year went back to Hong Kong to spend Chinese New Year with her family. It was a very special experience for Louisa and is a story she enjoys sharing with homeowners. Below she kindly shares with us the highlights of experiencing Chinese New Year in Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, Chinese New Year is an important traditional festival. Before the New Year, many people visit flower markets to buy New Year flowers, as we believe they bring good luck for the coming year. The markets are usually very busy and full of colour, and it really feels like the New Year is coming.

On New Year’s Eve, families have a reunion dinner together. It is a time to be thankful for a safe year and to hope for peace and happiness in the year ahead. On New Year’s Day, we eat traditional foods such as rice cakes, and adults give red packets to children to share good wishes. People also wear new clothes and visit relatives and friends to say New Year greetings.

From the first to the seventh day of the New Year, it is a busy time but also a happy and meaningful time spent with family.

As we welcome the Year of the Horse, I would like to wish everyone good health, happiness, and a year that goes smoothly. May the Year of the Horse bring positive energy, steady steps forward, and many joyful moments to you and your loved ones.

The Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac is all about momentum, freedom, and fearless energy. Symbolising speed and strength, the Horse represents people who are spirited, independent, and driven to chase their ambitions. Traditionally associated with vitality and adventure, Horse years are seen as dynamic periods marked by bold decisions, rapid progress, and a desire for movement - whether in careers, relationships, or personal growth.

Those born in the Year of the Horse are thought to be charismatic, hardworking, and quick-witted, with a natural flair for leadership. At its heart, this zodiac sign celebrates optimism, endurance, and the courage to gallop toward new horizons.
