What The Thursday Murder Club gets right about retirement

It's not all knitting and naps!

If you’ve been charmed by the book or the film The Thursday Murder Club, with its quirky characters, lively friendships, and sense of adventure, you might be surprised at how closely it mirrors real life in a vibrant retirement village. If you have visited us before, you’ll already know that retirement villages aren’t all tea and slippers. They’re hotbeds of laughter, friendship, and the occasional plot twist.

At Mayfield Watford, the fun, camaraderie, and unexpected stories aren’t just on the big screen, they’re woven into everyday living here.

No llamas here

If you have watched the new movie, you'll have enjoyed one of the opening scenes with llamas walking freely in the grounds of Cooper's Chase retirement village. Turns out, our real life retirement village isn't all that different. We often welcome animal friends to the village - we have a few dogs, cats, and birds as full-time residents and we welcome goats, chickens, guinea pigs, ponies, and even the odd alpaca from time to time, usually at our summer fair (as photographed).

Partners in crime

In the film The Thursday Murder Club, the heart of the story is the friendship between a group of retirees who come together for more than just puzzles and crime-solving, they’re each other’s cheerleaders, confidantes, and partners in mischief. The real mystery in The Thursday Murder Club isn’t who committed the crime, it’s how the residents manage to have so much fun while technically being “retired.”

At Mayfield Watford, we know the trick: friends. Whether it’s yoga buddies, book club sleuths, or partners in karaoke crimes, companionship makes every day special. And just like in the film, there’s a feeling that everyone has a story to tell. And we have our very own real life cheerleaders, The Mayfield Belles.

The film heroes sneak around chasing clues... Mayfield homeowners sneak an extra glass at wine tasting. From themed evenings to quizzes, fitness classes to art and photography groups, Mayfield Watford serves up a calendar of events that would keep even Joyce’s diary full.

So to those reading this who thought retirement villages were all knitting and naps, tea and slippers, we hope The Thursday Murder Club book and film have opened your eyes to the truth about modern retirement living. And if the film hasn't piqued your interest, a visit to Mayfield Watford certainly will. Arrange a visit to come and meet the team and some of our owners.

Our 9.3 rating on The Fork and 5 star rating on TripAdvisor should reassure you that it's well worth a visit for lunch or dinner.

Just like The Thursday Murder Club, life here at Mayfield Watford is proof that community, humour, and curiosity make every day a story worth telling.
